ARTIST STATEMENT
VEE FREDERICKS

IN MY OWN WORDS
My work begins with a simple but persistent question: what gives art its value? Is it the object itself or the energy of empathy and recognition that gathers around it? The Plinth was born from this curiosity, a desire to bridge art and ethics, beauty and responsibility. For me, the act of creation is also an act of amplification: lifting stories, re-framing meaning, and turning private struggle into shared visibility. In the works created for this exhibition, I centred my energy on amplifying three remarkable creatives whose work not only inspired me but moved me deeply. Their resilience and artistry compelled me to do more than admire; I felt an urgent responsibility to uplift their journeys. Using their stories as a compass, I found that the most authentic way to honour their impact was to build a stage for them —the Plinth —where their light could rise and radiate outward.
Each of these individuals embodies a facet of transformation. In the fashion model Marian, I explored the beauty of skin as both surface and story, using leather, wire and acrylic to mirror the map-like textures of her vitiligo, revealing how fragility can become strength. With musician Jason, rhythm became language; his drumming translated into brushstrokes, each mark echoing energy, humility and creative continuity. Textile artist Byron made me aware of authorship reclaimed through labour, the tufted textiles we created together standing as a testament to endurance, dignity and unseen craftsmanship.
Collectively, these works form an ecosystem of care. The Plinth is not merely an exhibition, but an ethical stage – a place where art and empathy converge. Through Saint Savant, my creative and philanthropic foundation, I aim to turn moral intention into tangible support, ensuring that art doesn’t just mirror society, but also mends it.
Ultimately, I create to honour others — to witness rather than consume, to elevate rather than extract. If my work helps someone feel seen, dignified or empowered, then that — to me — is true art.
